Prepare for the March (and Flight) of the Ants
There are worse things you could encounter during the summer months than ants. With that said, they can still be problematic. No doubt you have noticed crawling ants making lots of appearances over the last couple of months. This is set to continue throughout the rest of June. And once they die down, we have flying ants to look forward to.
Most people aren’t too concerned about a few flying ants, but they do have the potential to be a pain when their numbers get larger. Swarms of them are possible, particularly when the weather is hot and humid. Swarming occurs as part of the mating process, but while it is part of life for the ants, it is nothing but a pain for us.
And since they can hassle us throughout July and August, it makes sense to be prepared as much as possible.
If you spot them in your garden, see if you can work out where the nest is. Boiling water poured into the nest will eradicate most of them, and it can also prevent others from coming back. There are various insecticidal products on the market that are designed to rid you of ants too, so this provides another alternative. Do make sure you take care if you have pets, however, as many of these baits and powders are poisonous. Aerosol sprays can also stop them in flight, although it may not be adequate if lots of them are flying around outside.
If you discover flying ants are coming into your home, you’ll need to find ways to prevent this. Unfortunately, warm weather means most of us will fling open our windows and doors, and that means you will get some of them inside. However, this is very different from having a nest nearby and some other way they’re getting inside – through a gap in the brickwork, for example.
As you can see, the trick is to locate the nest. This is where they are coming from, so if you tackle this, you are tackling the problem at its root.
