There’s more information below on pest mice and mouse control in Dunfermline.
Pest mice
Mice are rodent vermin and chew everything they come across; their front teeth grow all the time and so their constant chewing stops the teeth from getting too long. The commonest pest mice in Scotland are the house mouse, the long-necked field mouse, also called the wood mouse, and the yellow-necked field mouse.
The house mouse likes to live inside buildings all year round but the field mouse or wood mouse is very often found inside too. They’re both tiny but are slightly different: the house mouse has smaller ears, eyes and tail and weighs less too, about 18gm compared to 25gm for a wood mouse.
Mouse infestations
Mice look for food and shelter in and around buildings. They dig well, are very good climbers, can jump– 30cm straight up in the air – and get through gaps as small as 6mm. They get into buildings from the bottom right up to the roof and it can be impossible to keep them out. The mice infest buildings inside by crawling through wall gaps, along cables and pipes, under floors, above ceilings and through attics; they move through entire terraces and through blocks of flats. Older buildings are good for mice because of all the gaps for them to get through; an old cottage was riddled with them upstairs and downstairs and needed mouse control in Dunfermline to clear the infestation. Mice get in to newer buildings and houses too; a new office block needed mouse control in Glenrothes because mice were running around the open-plan office. Mice will also hide in sheds and garages; we needed mouse control in Kelty because mice were eating bird feed and had to get rid of mice eating bulbs in a shed in Saline
What signs of a mouse infestation might you find? - small, dark droppings, chewed insulation, ‘dead mouse’ smell and often noises in the walls and roof in the night. Sometimes you see mice but they like to hide, especially in quiet, secluded places in attics, under kitchen units, in boiler and electric cupboards, in store rooms and under cover outside. A good example is mouse nests in stuff stored in attics - we used mouse control in Dunfermline for that last year, and we’ve used mouse control in Glenrothes when a hotel found mouse droppings under the sink.
Damage and disease from mouse infestations
Mice are called rodent vermin because they damage anything they find by chewing at it. We were called for mouse control in Dunfermline when mice chewed through water pipes in the roof and mouse damage to alarm cabling needed mouse control in Crook of Devon. Mice will even chew cars - we’ve used mouse control in Lochgelly for damaged car cabling.
Mice spread diseases like food poisoning, fleas and tapeworm in the droppings, urine, contamination and parasites that they leave wherever they go and they carry Weil’s Disease too, which is harmful to humans and dogs. Even when you can’t see the mice, they leave traces of disease and are a risk to health.
Food Businesses and rodent vermin control
Mice and rats are a risk to Food Businesses. The Food Hygiene Regulations and The Food Safety Act say that food and drink must be fit for human consumption and not contaminated by vermin; also that vermin must be kept out of the premises in the first place. Having mice in a food premises can mean fines and a bad reputation and maybe even closure by the council. Rodent control under a professional pest control contract is the best way to satisfy the law, Environmental Health and Auditors. Contract prevention and control of rodents is cost effective and efficient too, rather than fire-fighting infestations of mice. Contract pest control for mice and rats is suitable for small cafes through to large hotels; we provide food businesses and farms with contract pest control in Dunfermline and other towns and cities in the area we serve.
Mouse control methods
Poison bait, best used by a professional who knows exactly how to use it well and safely. Monitor baits to detect a mouse presence. Break-back traps, these very often can’t control an infestation alone though. Mouse proofing can help keep the vermin out in the first place. Glue Boards to trap mice in extreme infestations. Environmental management to keep areas clean and tidy and to deter mice.
