Pest mice
Mice are rodent vermin and chew everything they come across; their front teeth grow all the time and so their constant chewing stops the teeth from getting too long. The commonest pest mice in Scotland are the house mouse, the long-necked field mouse, also called the wood mouse, and the yellow-necked field mouse.

The house mouse likes to live inside buildings all year round but the field mouse or wood mouse is very often found inside too. They’re both tiny but are slightly different: the house mouse has smaller ears, eyes and tail and weighs less too, about 18gm compared to 25gm for a wood mouse.

Mouse infestations
Mice look for food and shelter in and around buildings. They dig well, are very good climbers, can jump– 30cm straight up in the air – and get through gaps as small as 6mm. They get into buildings from the bottom right up to the roof and it can be impossible to keep them out. The mice infest buildings inside by crawling through  wall gaps, along cables and pipes, under floors, above ceilings and through attics; they move through entire terraces and through blocks of flats. Older buildings are good for mice because of all the gaps for them to get through; an old cottage was riddled with them upstairs and downstairs and needed mouse control in Dunfermline to clear the infestation.
