Getting rid of mice
There are several different methods for getting rid of mice; break-back mouse traps, poison baits, glue boards and pest-proofing are some that we use. Getting rid of mice is not always a straightforward process either because they are very small rodent vermin, well adapted to getting into our buildings and living alongside us. Many customers try getting rid of mice themselves. The two mouse pest control methods our customers have tried most themselves so far this year have been mouse traps and poison bait.
Using just break-back mouse traps won’t normally control a mouse infestation. It’s asking a lot for ALL the mice to throw themselves on the traps and commit suicide voluntarily! When we visit to treat mouse infestations we often find mouse traps with bait on them, completely ignored by the mice around them. Break-back traps can help indicate the presence of mice though, but they need to be used correctly if they are going to do even this properly.
Customers buy poisons in shops and on the internet for ‘amateur’ or DIY use for getting rid of mice. We very often get calls from people who’ve tried using these poisons and have had to admit defeat, beaten by the tiny rodents no matter what they did. It isn’t just as simple as putting down a dish of poison. For getting rid of mice effectively you have to know which type of poison to use, in what form (blocks, loose bait, ready boxed and so on), where to put it and how much to use.
Poison bait can be dangerous too if it isn’t used correctly; it can poison pets, children, hens and other domestic animals and wildlife. It must be used carefully and following the legally binding instructions on the label for getting rid of mice.
And there is the rising problem of resistance to mouse poison bait. Mice that eat it don’t die but survive instead, breeding more mice that are resistant to the poison. If you’re using poison for getting rid of mice but you’ve still got the vermin running around do you really know if they are resistant to the poison? Or are you just using the wrong type of poison, or the wrong amounts, or putting it in the wrong place?
